Organisation of integrated fruit production
Organisation of integrated fruit production. The Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture is the main animator of Integrative Fruit Production (IPO) in Poland. IPO is realised by reduction of insecticide spraying in orchards by 30-50% and fungicide spraying by 30-50%, using selective pesticides, controlling residues in fruit and soil, introducing predatory mites to orchards, controlling mineral content of soil, leaves and fruits, and protection of the natural environment. Fifteen persons from the Institute are engaged in this problem. Integrative fruit production is performed in the country by fruit growers organised into groups educated at the Institute and supervised by instructors, according to principles published by the Institute. Every year IPO orchards are inspected by the Ministry of Agriculture commission. If conditions of IPO production are fulfilled, the grower receives a certificate and has the right to use an IPO label on their fruits. Controlled integrative fruit production is performed on area of about 5.000 ha by about 800 fruit growers organised in 50 groups. In the last season they delivered to market about 100.000 tons of apples. According to an estimate by the Institute, farmers organised in the IPO production use 30% less fungicides and 30 - 50% less pesticides than in traditional methods. Organisation of IPO production was highly appreciated by the Polish Ministry of Agriculture, which awarded the First Degree Award to Prof. E. Niemczyk and his co-workers. IPO system for ornamental plants grown under covers was also developed.
